Moxie just hit 10 years in business. That still feels a little unreal to type.
When I started this company, I had no idea what the next decade would look like. I just knew I wanted to build something I was proud of, work with good people, and do work that actually made an impact. Ten years later, I can confidently say it has been a journey full of lessons, growth, mistakes, wins, and a lot of learning along the way.
Here are a few of the biggest things I have learned over the last 10 years…
Work With People You Actually Enjoy Working With
This one goes both ways. Work with clients you enjoy and who enjoy working with you.
If you do not like the industry, the company, or the way a client operates, you will never do your best work. On the flip side, if a client does not trust you or seems frustrated at every turn, it is usually a sign the partnership is not the right fit.
Marketing agencies are not cheap. They are a partnership. Trust, communication, and mutual respect are required for real success. Sometimes the best decision for both sides is to part ways, and that is okay.
Hire People Who Care and Get Things Done
I am not a micromanager and I never will be. That means I put a lot of trust in the people I work with to do what they say they will do.
Hiring people who are passionate about their work, take ownership, and follow through is everything. When you trust your team and they trust you, the entire business runs better. Everyone wins when people are aligned and motivated to succeed together.
Get Your Contracts and Insurance in Order
This seems obvious, but it is something I have seen many new business owners overlook.
Proper contracts and business insurance matter more than you think. They protect you, your team, and your clients. As I have helped others start their own businesses over the years, this is one of the first things I stress. Get those ducks in a row early. Your future self will thank you.
Know Your Weaknesses and Ask for Help
You do not have to do everything yourself.
Letting go of certain responsibilities is hard, especially when you built something from the ground up. But the business is always better when tasks are handled by people who truly know what they are doing. Knowing where you need support and being willing to bring it in is a strength, not a weakness.
Always Remember Your Why
Anytime I am faced with a big business decision, I come back to why I started Moxie in the first place.
Does this decision align with my values? Does it support the kind of company I want to run? Does it move us closer to the life and business I set out to build? That simple check has kept me grounded more times than I can count.
I would not be here without an incredible team, amazing clients, and so many business partners who have supported Moxie along the way. I am deeply grateful for all of it. Here is to the lessons learned, the growth ahead, and the next 10 years of Moxie.
Cheers!
